Thar Earth Edition is based on the LX hardtop variant; available with a choice of petrol or diesel both powertrains
Mahindra has introduced the Thar Earth Edition with prices ranging from Rs 15.4 lakh to Rs 17.6 lakh (ex-showroom). This special variant comes at a premium of Rs 40,000 over the LX trim, on which it is based. Limited exclusively to the 4×4 models, the SUV retains its mechanical setup unchanged while incorporating various new features.
The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition Features
The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is finished in a special shade of matte paint that the company calls ‘Desert Fury’, and also gets special ‘Earth Edition’ badges on the B-pillars and rear fenders.
The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition gets a similar colour scheme on the inside, with the leatherette upholstery finished in dual-tone shades of beige and black. Carrying on the desert-inspired theme, the SUV gets line art that replicates the shape of dunes on the headrest. There’s the dark chrome finish on elements such as the Mahindra logo on the steering wheel, cupholders, gear knob and gear console.
Mahindra has said that each Thar Earth Edition will get a vehicle identification plate on the inside, which will be numbered, starting from ‘1’. While this is a common practice for limited-edition models, Mahindra has not specified if this special edition of the Thar will be produced in limited numbers.
Mahindra Thar Earth Edition powertrain and performance
The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is available only on the 4×4 variants, with the same choice of a petrol and diesel engines. The 2.0-litre petrol unit produces 152hp, 300Nm and can be mated to either a 6-speed auto or a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra Thar waiting period and upcoming launches
As of February 14, 2024, Mahindra had amassed 71,000 open bookings for the Thar, comprising both 4WD and RWD models. Insights from dealerships suggest a significant drop in demand for 4WD variants following the introduction of the RWD model. This shift is evident in the varying waiting periods, with 4WD models having a 4-5 month wait, while diesel RWD models face a much longer wait of nearly one year.
The launch of the Thar Earth Edition can be interpreted as Mahindra’s strategy to boost sales of the Thar 4WD. By introducing a unique variant with distinctive features, Mahindra aims to reignite interest in the 4WD lineup, thereby addressing the imbalance in demand across its Thar models and alleviating the extended waiting periods associated with certain configurations.
ALSO Mahindra also recently CONFIRMED that the 5-door Thar will be launched this year.
